TD Suite v6.2 Coming Soon!

We will be releasing version 6.2 of the Thermal Desktop Suite very soon. If you have a current usage and support subscription, you will be able to use it as soon as it is available. Watch our presentation from the virtual TFAWS event this year to learn more about new features:

Thermal Open-Topic Discussion

Wednesday, March 11, 2021 11 am MST

The CRTech Open Topic sessions are online sessions with topics suggested by attendees. The topics covered will be driven by questions submitted when you register. (Note that for this open topic session will focus on thermal and radiation; fluids will be covered in a separate session.) This is a great opportunity to request a demonstration of a modeling technique, ask a general question, or just see what comes up.

We will respond to all questions during the study hall, as time permits, or through our support system, whichever is more appropriate.

Questions submitted within a week of the session may be deferred to a later session.

Using REFPROP Mixtures in FloCAD

Liquid hydrocarbon fuels such as LNG and RP1 consist of multiple volatile substances. They can be treated as liquid-only (nonvolatile 9000 series property files), or as gas-only (8000 series files), but they have resisted representation as a substance that can change phases (6000 series, whether incompressible or compressible liquid).

FloCAD can handle pure substances in gas-only, liquid-only, or two-phase states. Mixtures of working fluids are allowed within a submodel, but only one substance may change phase. For this reason, up until now, FloCAD could not directly handle the full range of REFPROP predefined mixtures (*.mix files).

This post explains a new "MAPS" method for working with these mixtures. MAPS files for LNG and RP1 are available on our user forum, and others can be created upon request for other REFPROP predefined mixtures.

Changes to Intel Reminder

Last month, Intel announced "A New Era of Accelerated Computing," including significant changes to their Fortran compiler. This compiler is used by SINDA/FLUINT, the simulation engine that underlies Thermal Desktop.

For one thing, the new compiler is free as part of Intel's oneAPI HPC Toolkit, which offers new capabilities that we hope to include in future software releases.

Be sure to read up on these changes, which were summarized in this recent news post.

Exciting News From One of Our Partners

CRTech partner LoadPath (a Redwire company) is excited to announce the release of VeritrekTM 4.0, which includes rapid thermal model correlation.

Veritrek was developed to enhance the capabilities of Thermal Desktop®. Veritrek is a statistical software suite that allows you to analyze thermal models faster, minimize design risk, and maximize understanding of the entire design space. Veritrek gives you access to thousands of simulation results quickly by leveraging the power of reduced-order models (ROMs), which act as statistical emulators built from high-fidelity simulations. Veritrek’s current analysis features allow you to perform sensitivity studies, design optimization routines, trade studies, and response surface generation.

Veritrek 4.0 includes a rapid thermal model correlation feature that allows easy correlation of a thermal model to measure experimental test data. Veritrek’s Correlation Analysis feature leverages the power of ROMs to quickly investigate tens of thousands of different model parameter combinations, filtering out those that meet your margin criteria, and finding multiple parameter combinations that correlate your model to test data.

In an upcoming webinar, LoadPath will demonstrate Veritrek’s current features, and highlight new 4.0 features including rapid thermal model correlation. This webinar will be held at the following times. To sign up for any of these, please click here.

Will I Dream?

Some CRTech clients use "dongles" or USB keys for licensing purposes. We recently replaced old ones with newer ones, and have asked people to either mail back the old one or to take a picture to show that it has been destroyed.

A few people had fun with it: sending in before and after sledgehammer shots, for example. Though we don't think anyone will ever top this one! This is what happens when a NASA engineer with video skills and a sense of humor has too much time at home.
